Objective and success criteria
Students will: Plus or minus? Choose the sign.
- I can answer questions on today's skill on my own, without help.
- I can explain each step and say why it works.
- I can check my answer and spot a mistake.
Before and after
Needs first: Match a number sentence to a picture or story
Leads to: the next skill in this area.
Materials: Base-ten blocks, Number lines, Hundred square, Mini whiteboards and pens, Printed student sheet (below).
Warm-up Β· 4 min
- Quick retrieval from earlier learning (Match a number sentence to a picture or story). Students answer on mini whiteboards.
- Show answers together and note who needs support in the main task.
- Which number sentence matches the picture? β β β β + β (5 + 1 = 6 / 4 β 1 = 3 / 4 + 2 = 6 / 4 + 1 = 5) β 4 + 1 = 5Prompt: Count each group.
- Which number sentence matches the story? Sam had 10 birds. Sam gave 3 to Omar. How many birds does Sam have left? (10 + 3 = 13 / 10 β 2 = 8 / 10 β 3 = 7) β 10 β 3 = 7Prompt: Does the amount get bigger or smaller?
- Which number sentence matches the picture? β β β β β β + β β (7 + 2 = 9 / 6 β 2 = 4 / 6 + 3 = 9 / 6 + 2 = 8) β 6 + 2 = 8Prompt: Count each group.
Hook Β· 3 min
- Give a real shopping total or a score difference and ask for a quick estimate first.
- Share the objective: Plus or minus? Choose the sign. Read the success criteria together.
I do: model it Β· 7 min
- Work through the example out loud, saying why you do each step, not just what you do.
- Example: Which sign makes this true? 9 __ 1 = 10
- Step 1: 9 + 1 = 10
- Step 2: +
- Answer: +
- Pause after each step and ask a student to say what comes next.
We do: guided practice Β· 6 min
- Do these together. Students try each step on whiteboards before you reveal it.
- Use the hints as prompts rather than giving the answer.
- Which sign makes this true? 8 __ 4 = 4 (+ / β) β βPrompt: Is 4 more or less than 8?
- Should you add or subtract? Luis had 8 birds. Luis gave 2 to Ines. How many birds does Luis have left? (Add (+) / Subtract (β)) β Subtract (β)Prompt: Are things joined together, or taken away?
You do: independent practice Β· 7 min
- Students work on the student sheet. Circulate and check the first two answers of every student early.
- Students who finish: write a question of their own for a partner, with the answer.
The 6 questions are on the student sheet below, with answers in the key.
Exit ticket Β· 3 min
- Two questions on their own. Sort answers into got it / nearly / not yet to plan the next lesson.
- Which sign makes this true? 5 __ 1 = 6 (+ / β) β +Prompt: Is 6 more or less than 5?
- Should you add or subtract? Kai had 8 leaves. Kai gave 1 to Jamal. How many leaves does Kai have left? (Add (+) / Subtract (β)) β Subtract (β)Prompt: Are things joined together, or taken away?
Watch out for
- Subtracting the smaller digit from the bigger one in every column (52 β 17 = 45).
- Forgetting to add the regrouped (carried) ten.
Support and stretch
Support
- Review first: Match a number sentence to a picture or story.
- Use concrete materials: base-ten blocks.
- Give the first step of each question, or a partly worked example to finish.
- Pair with a confident partner for the guided practice.
Stretch
- Explain a common mistake in writing and how to fix it.
- Write a word problem that uses today's skill, then solve a partner's.
